Don’t Underestimate the Power of Tailoring

Growing up in a family of seamstresses, I’ve always known the magic that tailoring can bring to a garment. I watched my mother and aunts transform pieces with just a few tweaks here and there—nipping, tucking, hemming, and adjusting until the fit was just right. It’s a skill I’ve always appreciated… but I’ll admit, even I get a little lazy when it comes to taking my own clothes in for alterations.

Today, I finally decided to practice what I preach. I made a trip to my favorite local tailor with two dresses in hand—both needing a little love to be fully wearable.

The first dress is beautiful but long. I found myself only wearing it with wedges, and even then, I had to be mindful not to trip. I’m having it hemmed just a few inches, and it’s going to be so much more versatile. I can wear it with flats, sandals, or dress it up with heels and not feel restricted.

The second dress is one I adore, but the straps were always slipping. I’d constantly adjust them throughout the day, which made me avoid wearing it altogether. A quick strap adjustment is all it will take to bring it back into regular rotation—and know I will feel completely comfortable and confident wearing it.

These small alterations gave me two "new" pieces in my wardrobe—just in time for summer.

So let this be your reminder: don’t underestimate the power of a well-fitting garment. If something feels a little off—too long, too loose, not quite right—take it to your tailor. That piece you’ve been avoiding could easily become one of your favorites again.

Your closet might be filled with hidden gems—tailoring is the key to unlocking them.
