3 Easy Ways to Style a Maxi Dress for Summer Casual
Yesterday I had to drive almost four hours round trip, wait another four hours at a doctor’s office while accompanying my mom, and still somehow look and feel put together. The forecast was sunny and warm—80 degrees—but I also knew I’d be inside for most of the day, battling the chill of aggressive air conditioning. I needed an outfit that was comfortable enough for the long day ahead but polished enough so I could feel like myself. No surprise: I reached for a maxi dress.
Maxi dresses are truly one of summer’s easiest wardrobe wins. They’re one-and-done, breathable, and forgiving—but styling them can be the difference between looking like you’re headed to the beach or looking effortlessly pulled together.
So here’s what I did: I had three quick styling options in mind that I regularly rely on, all of which I already had in my wardrobe. These simple add-ons changed the vibe of the dress, while giving me the flexibility to adjust to the weather and the environment throughout the day.
And yes, I shared a quick video on Instagram to show you the three looks in action watch it here.
1. The Classic: Denim Jacket
Throwing a denim jacket over a maxi dress is as easy as it gets—and it always works. It adds a little structure to the softness of the dress, offers some warmth indoors, and instantly gives the look a casual, cool-girl vibe. You can drape it over your shoulders, roll up the sleeves, or tie it around your waist when it’s warm outside. It’s effortless, timeless, and endlessly functional. A great basket bag, a pair of footbed sandals complete the vibe.
2. The Polished Layer: Linen Blazer
If you want to elevate your maxi dress while still keeping it casual, add a lightweight linen blazer. This piece gives you a more tailored silhouette, ideal if you're heading to lunch after your errands or want to feel a bit more styled. Opt for neutral tones like white, beige, or soft gray to keep it summery. The breathability of linen keeps it season-appropriate, and the blazer adds just the right amount of polish. Add a great summer tote and a simple python print sandal are you’re RTG.
3. The Effortless Touch: Sweater Over the Shoulders
There’s something undeniably chic about a sweater draped over your shoulders. It gives that "I didn't try too hard" kind of vibe while being totally intentional. Bonus: it’s an easy layer if you get cold. I love doing this with a soft cotton or cashmere crewneck in a print or a lighter color—it becomes both a statement and a safety net for overly air-conditioned spaces.
Don’t Forget the Details
What brought each of these looks together wasn’t just the layering piece. It was the accessories. A couple layered necklaces, a pair of gold hoops, a great pair of sandals or sneakers, and a roomy but structured tote made the look feel complete. Each item added its own touch of personality and function without sacrificing comfort.
The Result?
I felt comfortable, confident, and like myself. Even though I spent the entire day driving and waiting, I never felt underdressed or frumpy. Instead, I showed up in a way that felt aligned with how I want to feel—elevated and ready for anything, even if the only thing on the agenda is waiting in a medical office waiting room.
It’s moments like these that remind me: getting dressed is never just about the clothes. It’s about how you want to show up for your day, your people, and yourself. Even a casual summer maxi dress can be styled to meet the moment—with ease and intention.
Style is a tool. Use it to make your life feel just a little bit better—one outfit at a time.
